When exposed to more or less humidity, wood changes dimensions in width and in thickness, not in length. A milimeter more or less thick, nobody will notice but when each floorboard gets a milimeter more wide, the wood will get stuck to a wall and warp. Long time ago, wooden floors were hammered or screwed but nowadays we use glue or no glue at all and install floating.
